I can’t tell you how much we enjoy the “Time Travelers” series from “Homeschool in the Woods,” and their recent addition, “The Industrial Revolution through the Great Depression,” is perhaps one of their best. I am impressed by how much information is given. This unit is a fantastic accompaniment to your history curriculum, and many of the lessons stand on their own.

The material states that it is for grades 3-8; however, your whole family will love to take part in the fun hands-on activities. There are 25 lessons included as well as 12 notebooking projects, several art projects, timelines, maps, recipes, a file folder game, and numerous activities. As you move through the lessons you will cover topics such as the construction of the railroads, the Indian wars, the Gilded Age, inventions, immigration, WWI, the roaring 20’s, the stock market crash, and the subsequent Great Depression, just to name a few.

The “Teacher Helps” section is full of helpful ideas and tips for the teacher. There you will find a blank lesson plan to help facilitate your scheduling as well as masters for all of the reproducibles so that you can use the same material for as many children as you need to. The “Additional Resources” section provides a plethora of titles to books, videos, and audio resources that will round out your lessons nicely.

My favorite thing about the HSITW units is the projects. The projects are creative, engaging and true to the time period. Things like “Building a Suspension Bridge,” “Making a Yo-Yo Quilt,” making a “Wright Brothers Flyer,” and “WWI Silk Postcards” prove to be fun for the whole family.

To celebrate the conclusion of the unit study you can invite your friends and family over to a Depression-Era dinner where you can serve them “Chipped Beef on Toast,” “Corned Beef Hash,” “Meatless Loaf,” and “Depression Cake.” Your kids will love dressing up in period costumes and showing off all that they have learned.

“Industrial Revolution through the Great Depression” is a veritable treasure trove of information that no homeschooling family should go without.
