The “Composers Activity Pak” by Homeschool in the Woods is a great way to introduce your child to the worlds’ greatest composers. This lapbooking/notebooking activity “pak” is one of the many “Hands-On-History Activity Paks” created by the Pak Family. “Composers” consists of 6 activities that will teach your student about 42 different composers from the Middle Ages until the 20th century. Handel, Bach, Beethoven, Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky, and Gershwin are just a few of the names you may recognize, but the fun doesn’t stop there. You will also learn about periods of music like classical, baroque, impressionist, and modern.
My favorite thing about this activity “pak” is that not only can you learn about the composer, their time period, and their particular style of music, but you can also listen to these great works of art through the 29 included MP3s. My only complaint is that there is no musical example from Gershwin, a personal favorite, but you should be able to find that for yourself easily enough. The instructions are super easy to follow and the activities are student lead. All images have been included so that you can create your own notebook to look just like the example.
If all of that is not enough to keep you busy, there is also vocabulary, timelines, a file folder display that shows orchestra seating, and a card game that matches the composer to the piece of music. There is more than enough here to give your student a good grasp on the composers, their style, and their works. This notebooking package can stand alone as your only composers curriculum or can be used to supplement other studies.
I highly recommend the “Composers Activity Pak” for those students that enjoy and thrive from hands-on learning.
