I am so impressed with “The American Revolution” unit study by “Homeschool in the Woods,” which is part of their popular “Time Travelers” series. This unit study is full-to-bursting with text and activities that cover many pertinent subjects such as colonial beginnings, the French & Indian War, Continental Congress, General Washington, women of the war, and a myriad of others.

There are 25 lessons in all which can be spread into 5-10 weeks of study. There is a written text for each subject as well as many activities to choose from for each such as creative writing, recipes, art projects, science experiments, timelines, penmanship, note booking, and your child can even make their own Haversack, just like colonial soldiers wore. Since there are so many choices for each subject there is no need to do all the activities listed. You are able to chose which projects you will complete. I find this to be helpful because my children learn better when they can spend their lesson time doing projects they are interested in.

Another thing I enjoyed is that the teacher’s introduction is so thorough. The “Tips to Consider” section lists all of the supplies you will need and there is even an extra section entitled “Teacher Helps” that includes a teacher key for all of the timelines and maps. Everything you need to get you going is included, except for the supplies of course.

If you like arts & crafts this unit study is perfect for you. You can choose from many different projects such as painting miniature soldiers, dioramas, making an authentic floor or table mat, and even candle dipping. For those of you who enjoy notebooking, there are 11 different notebook projects with pop-ups and layered books. If you are a living history buff, you are going to love this study as the final project, “A Tribute to the Revolution,” is a colonial life party where you can serve your guests authentic food and drink from the time period. If you want to make it more realistic you can don costumes and stage your own “battle” in the backyard.

The study states that it is for grades 3-8, however, the projects here are irresistible to students of all ages. The whole family will love this unit and the cost is dirt cheap compared to the amount of learning material that comes with the study. There is more than enough information here to give your student a good working knowledge of the American Revolution, and the events that lead up to it.

If you are studying the American Revolution this year, I definitely recommend “The American Revolution” by “Homeschool in the Woods.”
