“Colonial Life” by “Homeschool in the Woods” is a must-have addition to your history curriculum. I am amazed at the wealth of information that is packed into this short unit study. Cited for grades 3-8 this unit study will bring the colonial era to life for your whole family. There are 25 lessons in all that can be spread across 5-10 weeks of study. A variety of aspects of colonial life are covered with titles like “America’s Colonies Begin,” “The Colonial Home,” “Family Life,” “Faith in the Colonies,” “ Health & Medicine,” and a myriad of others.

Each lesson includes text and activities. There are numerous activities listed for each subject so you can choose which one will suit your family best. There are also several “Project Days” sprinkled throughout the unit. You can use these days to complete any work you haven’t finished yet and also to work on the amazing projects that are included such as creating your own archaeological dig, assembling your own period costumes, making pine needle pillows, cooking up authentic recipes, and much more.

If you like notebooking, you will be pleasantly surprised at how many activities are included. Topics like colonial clothing, houses, education, pastimes, and many others combine to make your notebook a vibrant piece of art. To conclude the study the final project is “A Colonial Spree.” Invite your family and friends over to step back in time to the colonial days. Show off your work in the “Colonial Museum”, and make them an authentic dinner true to the time period. Instructions are included to make centerpieces, napkin rings, name placards, and other decorations for your table and home.

All in all, I think this unit study is one that would benefit any homeschooling family. The activities alone are worth the price (which is fairly cheap), and the information is easily retained by students due to the hands-on nature of the projects. I definitely recommend “Colonial Life.”
